Lady Bucks win two from Elko

On the first warm weekend of the softball season, the Lowry Buckaroos varsity softball team went up against a tough opponent in Elko, and despite a lack of intensity at some times, they found a way to win the season series against Elko.

Game 1 on Friday, April 15 saw the Bucks get off to a good start for the weekend as they dominated from the very first pitch thanks to some timely hitting and a complete game from junior pitcher Kayla Doyle, who picked up the win in the circle. The Lady Bucks would go on to win the first game of the series by a score of 6-1.

The games on Saturday had a different feel to them as, this time, it was Elko that got off to a hot start. Doyle started this game too but was relieved by another junior pitcher in Shannon McClellan midway through the game. The Bucks’ bats didn’t come to life in this game until the 5th inning when they scored all 4 of their runs on the way to an 11-4 defeat.

“Our intensity was really lacking at the start, and Elko came ready to play,” said McClellan.

After losing their first game of the day, the Lady Bucks came back in Game 2 with a sense of urgency, and you could tell from the beginning. Junior shortstop Madi Gonzalez led off the game with a triple, while the Bucks scored 3 of their 7 runs in the 1st inning. The latter stages of the game didn’t see much excitement as the Buckaroos cruised to a 7-4 victory, with McClellan picking up her first victory of the weekend.
