Lady Gaga takes on college rape

In late August of 2015, Stephani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, more commonly referred to as Lady Gaga, released her new hit single, “Till It Happens to You”. The song was written for the 2015 documentary, “The Hunting Ground” which unveils true stories of campus rape at colleges across the nation. The documentary, “The Hunting Ground” was co-written by Lady Gaga and Diane Warren and presented at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival. Director, Kirby Dick, and producer, Amy Ziering, both felt they needed someone who could convey a powerful message, and the “Mother Monster” was the only reasonable choice.

The lyrics of Gaga’s new song spell out how people make a mockery of rape, and how it can’t be understood until it happens to someone. Nobody knows until they experience first-hand the misfortune of sexual harassment.

Gaga is stepping outside of her comfort zone by writing about such a relatable and current event like rape and rape culture on college campuses. Some of Gaga’s more popular music is about the party vibe and self-love in songs such as, “Born This Way” and “Poker-Face”.

The theme of her music has made a drastic change, but a change that was very powerful and noticed by millions across the globe.
