Lowry wrestling has truly been a dynasty. Recently, they beat the Nevada state record for consecutive dual wins with 109. This year, Lowry has been struggling more, but they are looking to return the program to its previous stature.

This past weekend, Lowry hosted the Cody Louk Invitational. Many teams including Elko, Reed, Wooster, and others from across Northern Nevada came to compete. The tournament was definitely one to watch, and the community support was great as well.

The team will get back in the wrestling room and get back to work.

“We did okay, it would have been nice to have kids place a little higher than what they did. We got beat by Spanish Springs, Reno, and Carson, but overall, it was a good tournament and tough competition. We will be fixing a few things in practice this week and it’s still early in the year and we have a young team,” said Grady.

Individually, Lowry did well too. Matthew Souza placed 5th in the 106-pound weight class. Ridge Ricketts placed 4th in 113s. Bryan Day placed 3rd in 126s. Trase Bell finished in 2nd place for 132s. Quint Bell placed 5th in 138s. Cameron Okuma placed 6th in 145s. Shaun Mentaberry placed 5th for 170s. Micah Somers won his weight class of 220s and Chris Karchella placed 3rd for 285s. As a team, Lowry placed 4th with 149 points, Reno was 3rd with 173 points, Carson was 2nd with 197, and Spanish Springs won with 204.5 points.

“I feel this weekend went pretty good. We had some tough battles but we all pulled through and wrestled well,” said Mentaberry, who serves as a captain for the team along with Trase Bell and Nate Nelson.

“We all need to work on getting to our feet when we are on the bottom. I think that will help the whole team out a lot,” explained Mentaberry.

Nelson has high expectations for the team.

“We still have a lot of hard work ahead of us and I believe that we have hard-working kids on the team this year to make that happen,” said Nelson.
