Last Friday, Lowry’s varsity football team suffered its first loss of the season to Elko at home.

The game started off just like all of Lowry’s games this season, with a short inside run by Jace Billingsley just five minutes into the game. A PAT gave the Buckaroos a 7-0 advantage.

Elko pushed the ball to the 1-yard line but could not score on Lowry’s tough defense.

“Defensively we stopped them several times,” said junior Gus Duncan.

By the end of the first quarter, Lowry was holding on to a 7-0 lead.

To start the second quarter, Elko fumbled and senior Dylan Ongert recovered the ball, but Lowry had trouble converting on third down and it was soon Elko ball. With a minute left in the first half, Elko scored on a 10-yard pass to tie up the game.

To kick off the second half, Lowry got the ball and marched it down the field, and scored on a pass from senior Mitch Pollock to junior Cole Hatcher, with a blocked PAT, the score was 13-7. Elko immediately answered by running the kickoff back and converted on the PAT. Lowry was down 13-14 late in the third quarter.

The Buckaroos answered with a 40-yard run by Jace Billingsley but couldn’t convert the PAT and the score was 19-14 going into the fourth quarter.

But in the fourth quarter was when the Buckaroos started to fall apart.

“We had a couple of penalties in the fourth quarter and that’s really what cost us,” said head coach Tim Billingsley.
