College is a big expense that can be seen as a burden for some. Shooting the West (STW) wants to help with this expense. They are looking for students who love photography. They are giving out scholarships to several people who want to do photography as a hobby or a career.

In a press release from Shooting the West, the premier photography experience held annually in Winnemucca, the organization offered aspiring high school students the opportunity to apply for a $300 scholarship to future Shooting the West events.

Created almost 28 years ago by renowned, local photographer Linda Dufurrena and the late Sheri Allen, the event brings world-class photographers to Winnemucca for a week-long learning experience to students of all ages, walks of life, and levels of photographic experience and interests.

The release continued, high school students from Humboldt, Lander, and Pershing counties who show an interest in photography as a future profession or hobby, will be able to enrich their knowledge by attending Workshops and/or the Friday-Saturday Symposium through the generous donation of Bill and Debbie Origer of Albany, Oregon, enthusiastic Shooting the West and Shooting the Fair participants. The Origins know, firsthand, the contribution that knowledge, learning, and the encouragement of others can mean to one starting out in photography. STW is a friendly place to learn and share our passion for photography.

According to the press release, “We want to give back and support this event,” said Bill and Debbie.

“You are never too old to learn or too young to start,” added Brenda Heintz, STW’s Executive Director. “This is going to be a wonderful opportunity for two lucky young photographers to learn new techniques and to meet others who share their passion.”

Students must be from 14-18 years of age and currently attending their local high school or show proof of enrollment in an alternative school or homeschooling. Applications for the 2015-16 Shooting the West Scholarship for Aspiring High School Photographers can be downloaded from the website www.shootingthewest.org beginning October 30. Completed applications will be accepted from November 2, 2015, thru January 4, 2016, with the winners being notified in time for Shooting the West registration, which opens January 18th, at 6:00 a.m., for the event being held April 25 – May 1, 2016.
