Rain can’t dampen Homecoming 2015

Rain can’t dampen Homecoming 2015

Homecoming 2015 was, as our generation says, one for the books. The theme this year was “Dayton better hide because Lowry’s coming at you with Buckaroo pride.”

Some might say Homecoming week started Saturday and Sunday, September 26 and 27 with students getting together with their graduating class to decorate windows at local businesses and decorate their section of the gym. Senior’s section included of poster saying “Dayton, What’s good?” featuring a picture of Nicki Minaj.

Homecoming week officially started Monday with Color War Day: The Freshman wore yellow, Sophomores green, Juniors purple, and Seniors orange. The day began with a pep assembly, it was a huge success. The dance team performed their dance and the Homecoming candidates then had a dance competition, Omar Guerrero and Madison Mayo won first as they hit the Quan, Nate Nelson and Jillian Albright won second, and Cameron Okuma and Caitlynn Cooper got third. The assembly ended with the Homecoming video, students even got out a little early for lunch.

The lunchtime activity was a gummy bear hunt. Contestants had to find and eat all the gummy bears in a bowl filled to the top with Cool Whip and ended up with a face covered in Cool Whip. Seniors had all the gummy bears gone before anyone else did. Monday was finished off with the Powderpuff game, read more about it on page 17.

“I liked the color war day because purple looks great on me and the pep assembly got me super jacked for a great week of football,” said Michael Rangel.

Tuesday was Twin Day and it was difficult to tell who was who. Students were able to dress like one another and not be slandered for it. If you already had an identical twin to whom you dressed alike, you received even more praise than normal.

“It’s like Tuesday was made for me. I thought that it was interesting and exciting seeing how everybody decided to dress up with their twin,” said real-life twin, Amaya Herrera.

Are you good at racing? How about a three-legged race? Tuesday’s lunchtime activity definitely tested the skills of a few students. It was a fun, intense competition, but there is always a winner. The freshmen went head-to-head with the juniors and ended up pushing through and claiming first. The juniors got second and the seniors got third. The day ended with some exciting He-Man volleyball games, read more on page 20.

Wednesday was a day for everyone to find their inner hippie, with Tie Dye Day. Many students and even some teachers dressed up in whatever tie-dye things they could possibly find. This day had an overwhelming amount of participants. The people who did participate showed a huge amount of school spirit and Lowry pride. The lunchtime activity was to pin the tail on the hippie.

“Tie-dye day was real groovy, even though it was game day for volleyball and we had to dress nice some girls still sported tie-dye in their attire somehow,” said Sierra Thiede.

Seniors started their Thursday at 5:45 a.m. with Senior Sunrise on the track. Thursday gave everyone an opportunity to express what they are a fan of. One student took the day a little too literally with a shirt with a fan on it, like a ceiling fan, real funny.

Despite the pouring rain and cold temperatures, Thursday’s parade was a lot of fun. It seemed like just about every sport, club, and class had its own float, and even though conditions weren’t the best the community still turned out to support Lowry. Surprisingly the freshmen float won best float out of all the classes but cross country took the overall best float in the parade. The senior float was the worst float out of the four classes. Maybe that’s because only about 6 people showed up to decorate the float on both days. Everyone can agree that the parade is a great idea and that hopefully there will be many more.

Thursday was also the bonfire which was supposed to start at 8:30 p.m. but started at 8:00 p.m. for some odd reason. While the fire got started early, it was great to come together (after a cold wet parade) next to a nice warm fire and talk about how great homecoming week had been so far. It’s also always fun to watch the fireman put out the fire with a giant hose. The only thing that would improve the bonfire is if Lowry would get someone out there with hot chocolate.

“Fan Day was fun because I got to rep some Air Force gear. And even though it was extremely cold and wet, the parade was surprisingly fun because all the volleyball girls are always fun to be around and we made the best of it,” said Juliana Velasco.

Friday’s dress-up day is by far the easiest to dress up for, blue and gold day. Student outfits varied from kids going all out and even painting their faces to kids wearing black. Friday’s pep assembly started off with the National Anthem being played by the pep band. They then announced the winner for the week’s activities, Cross country’s float won the parade, Art club won window decorating, and seniors won gym decorating. Currently, the class standings are as follows: first (by 20 points) Seniors, second Juniors, and third/ fourth tied by Sophomores and freshmen.

After this announcement, the He-Man champs, the Seniors, battled it out with the faculty. After a nail-biting game, the Seniors won. The assembly ended with a friendly class competition, a lip-syncing competition. Freshman sang to “White and Nerdy”, Sophomores to “Ice Ice Baby”, Juniors to “Bringing Sexy Back”, and Seniors to “Fergalicious”. Drama and Stagecrafts provided the competition with some sick lighting from their spotlights.

“It’s not about the moves, it’s about the moment,” said lip sync battle participant representing the Junior class, Nate Chapman.

The lunchtime activity gave students the opportunity to discover their inner actors with charades. The classes each got a list of activities they had to act out in three minutes. Sophomores won, freshmen were second, seniors third, and juniors last.

“Fridays have always been my favorite dress-up day. It’s exciting to participate in the pep assembly and dress-up day to build up energy for the games that night. The football game was great, the boys did great and I’m happy that we were able to get a win for Homecoming. All the other teams did really well too. All the candidates this year are great people and I’m happy that they were nominated,” said Tiana Herrera.

Friday concluded with Friday night lights as the Bucks took on Dayton searching for their first win of the the season. The Buckaroos managed to do that and more as they shut out Dayton 40-0. At halftime of the big homecoming football game, the 2015 Grand Marshal, Saundra Matheny, and then this year’s homecoming royalty were crowned. Omar Guerrero and Maddie Mayo took home the honor of homecoming king and queen.

“Winning homecoming king was pretty kewl. It was crazy to just be nominated and actually winning was something else. I don’t think I’ve taken that many pictures in my life,” said Omar Guerrero.

“I was really excited and a little overwhelmed at first. I was caught off guard honestly. I’m just really grateful for the opportunity and I had such a fun week with the whole school and all the faculty and everyone that made it as great as it was, Friday night was the cherry on top,” said Madison Mayo.

A fun-filled week of all sorts of festivities concluded on Saturday night with the Homecoming dance. Students dressed in their semi-formal attire and piled into the new gym for a night filled with dancing, fun, and friends. The dance was accompanied by some jamming club music, a DJ, awesome decorations, lights to make for an attention-capturing light show, and much more. In the back corner of the gym, a small table was set up where students could purchase drinks and some food items. The dance made for an amazing end to Homecoming and some great memories.

“The dance was a lot of fun it makes me sad that it was the last one, but it was very memorable,” said Ashlee Barron.

“The dance was swagalicious and we made a lot of memories that will last a lifetime,” said Christian Riddle.

This homecoming week truly was one for the books and everyone can agree that they had a wonderful time no matter the dress-up day, sporting event, or even lunchtime activity.
