Saying goodbye and hello to staff members at Lowry

Saying goodbye and hello to staff members at Lowry

By Amaya Gonzalez Posted June 5, 2025

As the school year draws to a close, Lowry High School faces a season of change, filled with both sadness and excitement. Several beloved teachers are bidding farewell to the school, while new educators are stepping in to continue the tradition of excellence in teaching that Lowry is known for.

For many, the news of the teachers leaving has been a moment of reflection. Whether it’s a retirement after decades of service or a move to new opportunities, these educators have made an indelible mark on the lives of countless students. Their influence extends beyond the classroom, fostering an environment where learning is not just about books but about growing as individuals.

Mr. John Brooks, a fixture in the math and wrestling programs, is retiring this year. Their legacy includes the countless students they inspired to do and excel in their love for wrestling, leading the school to many state wins.

“I will certainly miss coaching, but the team will be left in good hands,” said Brooks. “I have not made too many plans for when I’m done.  I guess I had better do that. Haha. My time here at Lowry has been awesome because of all the new things I learned. I had to refresh all my Math skills,” said Brooks

His enthusiasm and joking personality have made his classroom a favorite.

Ms. Jessica Lindsay, who teaches in the science department, is also leaving Lowry this year. She finds her departure bittersweet, but is excited for this new chapter in her teaching career

“It really is a bittersweet feeling leaving Lowry,”  said Lindsay. “I love the students and the staff, and I will miss them, but I’m excited for this new chapter in my life.”

Lindsay is excited  to teach a new grade, but is grateful she will be teaching the subject she likes and is familiar with

“I’m going to be teaching earth science, and that’s a subject I enjoy. It’s going to be different teaching eighth grade, but I’m excited for it.”

Mr. Jeff Setzer, an English teacher at Lowry for 28 years, is also saying goodbye to Lowry High School. Setzer hopes he will inspire many students to continue their education and future outside of his classroom.

“Same as all teachers, I think,” said Setzer. “I just hope that I’ve helped as many students as possible to get something out of high school and move on to the next stage of their lives. Like anyone, I just hope that my work over the years mattered in some way and amounted to something good.”

Setzer is also planning on traveling year-round and not just during the summer.

“After leaving, I don’t have any grand plans so far. I look forward to traveling in the fall and the spring instead of just the summer, and I’m just curious to see how it all plays out. I’m ready for something different, and I’m excited for it,” said Setzer.

While farewells are never easy, Lowry is also excited to introduce a new group of educators who are eager to continue the school’s legacy of excellence. The incoming teachers bring fresh perspectives, new ideas, and a wealth of experience to the school community.

Ms. Serah Iroz, who will be joining the history department, is already making waves with her vibrant energy and excitement for the new school and students she will see again.

“I am going to be teaching sophomore World History at Lowry. I am excited to teach new and interesting material, as well as see previous students from throughout the years, and experience the high school culture from the teaching perspective,” said Iroz. Iroz is also excited to get new experiences.

“I hope to make it through the year as smoothly as possible, but also to be a little more involved in new and challenging things,” said Iroz.

Mr. Brian Myers will be teaching in the English department. Mr. Myers taught at Winnemucca Junior High for many years, also teaching English. Mr. Myers is excited to continue teaching at Lowry.

“I’m excited about everything! I hope to continue to build bonds, foster relationships, and create success with as many students as we can,” Mr. Myers said. “I have been waiting to get my foot in the door at Lowry, and now that it is my time to shine.”

The incoming staff also includes math additions. Ms. Nicloe Angus has years of experience supporting students’ learning and understanding of math.

“I am most excited about seeing some of the students I have already had and potentially getting the opportunity to help them grow even more academically,” said Angus. “I am also excited to be teaching at a higher level than previously and, therefore, growing as an educator. Achievements I would like to accomplish at Lowry include guiding students to grow in their mathematical skills as well as expanding upon my teaching skills at the secondary level.”

Even with most of the new faces, Lowry will gain a familiar one.

Mr. Taylor Corak will be officially joining the Lowry staff as a new addition to the math department and as an assistant coach for wrestling.

“I’m excited to be officially on the Lowry staff. I know math is a tough subject, but I hope to be able to understand it and give them a positive experience here at Lowry,” said Corak.

Corak is also excited to take up the assistant wrestling coach position at Lowry.

“I hope to hopefully get the team back on top for the state championships and take home more state wins for Lowry,” said Corak.

As Lowry School transitions into this new chapter, it is clear that the spirit of community remains strong. The dedication of outgoing teachers and the enthusiasm of the incoming staff ensure that students will continue to receive the guidance, support, and education they need to succeed.
