This young woman has been recognized in her community for playing volleyball exceptionally well. She not only excels on the court but also in the classroom and other activities. The Student-Athlete of the Issue is Juliana Velasco.

Velasco’s love for athletics began at a young age. She started playing city league sports in elementary school, including soccer. Velasco spent several years playing volleyball for traveling clubs. She made the Junior High volleyball team in the seventh grade. Since then, she has had an extreme passion for the sport of volleyball.

“Volleyball is a great opportunity to be a part of the school and to be involved in the community,” said Velasco.

Throughout her years of playing, she has been acknowledged for her outstanding ability on the court. Her teachers, coaches, peers, and teammates all praise her and recognize her dedication to sports and academics.

“Juliana contributes to the varsity team in several ways. Her greatest contribution is the excitement she brings on offense. When Juliana smokes a ball over the net, she brings the entire team off their feet in excitement. She has grown tremendously as a hitter and is always a joy to watch. As one of our captains and senior on the team, Juliana brings a lot of leadership and drive to her teammates. Her encouragement and determination help the team to focus on what needs to happen during matches,” said varsity coach, Megan Allen.

It is apparent that Velasco sets herself apart from her teammates in a positive way with her outgoing attitude and determination.

“What sets Julie apart from other athletes is her determination and attitude,” said Allen. “She holds this internal drive to be the best on the court. Every time she contacts a ball she is hitting as hard as she can, without holding back. Her attitude then matches that determination and empowers those around her to be their best. Sometimes this pair of qualities can be the downfall of some athletes, but for Julie, it pushes her to be her best as well as the team.”

Throughout high school, she has had many supporters who have boosted her morale and encouraged her to keep going.

“My family and best friends have been my biggest supporters. They have always supported me in everything I’ve wanted to do and have never told me I couldn’t do anything. In my freshman year when I was on Varsity, my friends would make special cheers for me in the stands and go crazy. They’re awesome,” said Velasco.

Velasco has many bright options for her future. She has been looking at the University of Nevada, Reno, and Eastern Oregon University for Nursing school. Although she is not sure if she will continue to play volleyball in college, she is keeping her options open.
