Swimmers take to the pool

By Carlos Esparza Posted March 12, 2011

On Saturday, March 11, the Lowry Swimmers traveled to the Northwestern pool in Reno. For the first meet in the year, they swam exceptionally well. Both boys and girls defeated the Reed Raiders. Being new to the team, many swimmers were anxious for their race to start.

In a swim meet, swimmers compete in a variety of races such as the 200 IM (Individual Medley), 100-yard butterfly, 100 free, and also relays. The teammates had to rely on each other to place in their relay events, which add up to the most points. For the individual races, many swimmers qualified for zone times.

For the girls, Johana Christensen, Patricia Bates, Tori Echeverria and Jillian Pfarr qualified in their events. Many new girls placed first in their heats. As team captain, Tori Echeverria was very thrilled with the team’s success, “We did really well for the first meet. I think we have a strong team this year.”

The girl’s team beat the Reed girls by three points. Every swimmer can help the team score higher and make or break a meet.

For the boys, Michael Drake, Alexander Jackson, Jonathan Landa, Jessie Pate, Tysom Shurtliff, and Carlos Esparza surpassed zone times. Returning for his second year, Jeremiah Maesterjuan has noticed how everyone on the team is working harder at practice. “This year, everyone is working harder. I’ve noticed at practice, for me I took off two seconds on all my times.” The boy’s team also defeated the Reed Raiders by 18 points.

The final scores were:
Girls: 131 to 128
Boys: 120 to 102

The Lowry Swimmers will return to the pool this Saturday, March 19 against Manogue High School.
