Many students at Lowry know about the long-time rivalry between the wrestlers and basketball players. Many people do not know the reason why, but that is what this article is for: to break down why this rivalry is a thing. In a recent interview, Nate Nelson, a senior wrestler and senior basketball player, Brian Shettler gave their opinions as to why they think their sport is better.
Nelson and Shettler agree on the workload for their respective sports.
Nelson said wrestlers put in “About 15 hours a week.” Shettler thinks the basketball is the same, “I would say close to 15 hours as well.”
They disagree on who works harder.
Shettler said, “I think that we work a lot harder because we run a lot of liners, which involves sprinting.” Nelson agreed sarcastically, saying, “Definitely basketball because they do get water breaks, so it must be pretty tough.
Both agree there is some jealousy between the two teams, but for different reasons.

“After we started winning all of our state championships, they haven’t liked us,” Nelson said. Shettler disagreed, “I think they started hating us when we took coach [Austin] Mayo from them.”
Maybe if both these athletes swapped places for a week, they would see what it feels like to give the other sport a try.
Nelson replied, “Probably not because wrestling is more rewarding by winning each match by yourself.” Brian sarcastically added, “No, because the practices would be way too easy and I wouldn’t need a water break.”
The truth has been spilled as to what this rivalry is about, but how long will it continue? That is for the wrestlers and basketball players to decide.
