Lowry had ten athletes that qualified for the state meet in Carson City and all of them performed very well beating out schools much larger than our small town high school. The athletes represented Lowry well and proved that we can compete with big-time competition.
The track and field stars that contested were as follows; Kenadee Jeppsen, Jillian Albright, Hailey Hinkle, Shelby Garrison, Maddie Montero, Hailey Fernandez, Audrey Snow, Erick Lopez, Bryan Terry, and Devin Dowd.
Kenadee Jeppsen was the sole athlete who took first in an event. She jumped 5’4” in the high jump to earn a state championship. She also placed 5th in the long jump and 3rd in the 4×400 relay with Albright, Hinkle, and Garrison.
Jeppsen described the high jump event.
“It was only me and one other girl remaining, the girl that got second, and I have never jumped that high before so it became my new [personal record]. So I was nervous because we both got that same height, I just had fewer misses than her. We both went up to 5’5” and we both missed it three times. So they go down to our previous height and we both got that on our third try and then we went down again and I got it on my second and she got it on her third,” said Jeppsen.
Sophomore Erick Lopez competes in the 100m dash and has been finishing with some pretty crazy times this track season. Lopez finished sixth in the state. Lopez walked through how he prepared for the race.
“I was pretty well prepared, my team was cheering me on and I really felt like I could get it. I guess it just really wasn’t my day,” said Lopez
Lopez concluded the interview with a truly confident statement and excitement for the next season.
“Next time I race I will get the state champion title, next time I’m going to get it for sure,” said Lopez.
