The varsity softball team began their season last weekend in the Del Campo tournament in Reno, held on March 9-11.
The team had both ups and downs in the tournament. The Bucks faced Reed first, getting off to a rocky start, and they lost the game 13-0. The girls played Monterey Trail the next day, winning a close game 8-7. In the next contest, the girls fell to Christian Brothers 9-2, then lost to Del Oro 2-1. In the last game of the tournament, the girls beat Antelope 4-3, finishing the tournament 2-2.
Assistant coach Austin Mayo was pleased with the way his team came out to start the season.
“Yeah, I was very happy,” said Mayo. “We talked all week about trying to establish ourselves early on for the season, and the girls did a great job of that. Macy Katzenmeyer and Sylvie Prokasky pitched awesome and did everything the coaches asked of them.”
Mayo knows the team will be a top contender in league play, but hopes the team will be better at finishing out each series.
“One of the things we tend to struggle with each year is finishing out each series,” said Mayo. “We win the first two games and get excited, and by the third game, we can be a little down, so we are going to focus on staying active and being as invested in the third game as the first two.”
The team’s first regular-season series was held on March 18 in Spring Creek. The girls won each game, outscoring the Spartans by a total of 51-1. The girls’ next series will be against Sparks in Sparks on March 24-25.
