Every year Lowry volleyball puts on a “Pink Game” in October, Breast Cancer Awareness month, at which they raise money for someone in the community with cancer.
“Each year we raise money in support of those in our community who are fighting cancer. This fundraising event has grown tremendously over the years. This year I expect it to be better than last because of its popularity. We have worked hard to gain community support over the last three years and based on the full gym we had in our first home match, I feel like the community will come strong for it,” said varsity coach Megan Allen.
This year they have decided to support someone who has always been at their games and supported them, Basilio Guerrero. Guerrero has been supporting Lowry volleyball since his daughter, Betsy Guerrero, played.
“Basilio has always been an amazing fan and supporter even after his daughter graduated from the program. You can tell he loves to watch us and it’s such an honor to sponsor him and I’m so excited to be able to play for him my senior year,” said Juliana Velasco.
Betsy Guerrero graduated from Lowry in 2012 she played volleyball, basketball, and softball at Lowry and went on to play volleyball at Lassen Community College. Guerrero’s son, Omar Guerrero plays basketball and is in drama. He is also the Student Body Treasurer.
Basilio is currently battling brain cancer, he was diagnosed in the summer of 2014. With two kids attending Lowry, he has always supported the athletics and other programs.
“We’re happy to support those in our community in need, but Basilio’s kindness and love for our players and school makes this event even more meaningful to our program and everyone in it,” said Allen.
Lowry volleyball will be taking donations and selling cupcakes and shirts. In past years they have raised almost a thousand dollars, this year they are hoping to raise even more.
“I love watching volleyball it’s the greatest sport there is, so I’ll always root for the Bucks. I’m thankful for the support of such wonderful girls” said Basilio.
The game is Thursday, October 15 against South Tahoe. Freshman at 4 p.m., JV at 5 p.m., and varsity at 6 p.m.
