What you might have missed this year in Lowry sports

Another memorable year is ending and all of the sports are coming to a close as well. Lowry did very well with every athletic program this year and is hoping to continue to do well.

Football (1-8, 9th place)
Lowry’s football team did not do as well as they had anticipated ending the season with one single win against Dayton during homecoming week. Lowry picked up a new head coach before the season and that person was Taua Cabatbat who is also the weightlifting teacher at Lowry.

Seniors: Diaz, Dominic; Nelson, Nathan; Mentaberry, Shaun; Okuma, Cameron; Mayorga, Alan; Venzor, Michael; Diaz, Victor; Sadler-Riddle, Dylan; Roman, Nicholas; Somers, Mikeas; Silva, Anthony; Karchella, Christopher; Cuevas Contreras, Cesar; Pardini, Orlando.

Girls Soccer (7-7-2, 5th place)
The girl’s soccer team has picked up a new head coach for the 2016-17 year Ed Partee. Lowry is hoping that he can take the team to regionals and state. This year’s team went to regionals but lost in the first round to Fallon. The team did very well throughout the whole season.

Seniors: Cooper, Caitlynn; Partee, Brittany; Wolicki, Cheyenna; Mayo, Madison; Pate, Lindsay.

Girl’s Golf
For many years now Lowry’s girl’s golf team has made it to regionals or state. This year’s squad went to state and took third place. Next year the team will be pretty much the same because there were not many seniors on the team.
Seniors: Allen, Amber.

Volleyball (13-3, 2nd place)
Lowry’s volleyball program has always been a dominant program at Lowry and not much changed this year. Volleyball went on to go to regionals but did not make it to state however next year’s team will have many seniors who have already competed at the varsity level.

Seniors: Albright, Jillian; Iturriaga, Darion; Thiede, Sierra; Velasco, Juliana; Barron, Ashlee; Herrera, Chelsea.

Cross Country
The Cross Country team did very well this year. Everyone on the team went to zone but only one of them went to state and that was Rebecca Kuskie. The cross country team will be a very young team next year and are looking to send more runners to state.

Seniors: Gallups, Liam; Everhart, Brienna; Maher, Camryn; Ziemer, Alexandra.

Boys Soccer (6-7-3, 5th place)
This year was a good one for the boy’s soccer team. However, they did not go as far as they had planned. The boys finished their season in fifth place. The team played South Tahoe in the playoffs and couldn’t find what was needed to win, unfortunately.

Seniors: Mullis, Joseph; Diaz, Jordan; Shettler, Brian; Escobedo, Jesus Antonio; Lloyd, Levi; Burroughs, Trevor; Irons, Weston; Kepler, Mathew; Aguilar, Ariano; Gallardo-Gutierrez, Ariel; Lopez, Sergio.

Boy’s Basketball (14-2, 2nd place)
Lowry’s basketball program has done pretty well for the past few years. This year’s team went to playoffs and lost by three points to South Tahoe. The team consisted of eight seniors. The team had many battles but just like every year it was Lowry vs. Elko was the game to see.

Seniors: Diaz, Dominic; Rogers-Taylor, Jared; Riddle, Christian; Hales, Jacob; Guerrero, Omar; Shettler, Brian; Goucher, Brody; Lutzow, Nathan.

Girl’s Basketball (13-3, 2nd place)
The girl’s basketball team went past the regular season of play but found their equalizer. The girls played Fallon to go to regionals and did the impossible so it seemed. Going into that game Fallon was undefeated and Lowry just barely beat Fallon which made them advance to playoffs. As the girls traveled to Reno to play for a chance at state they lost the first game to Faith Lutheran which ended the season.

“The team was full of some of the best athletes and they are all just as passionate about the game as I am. It took a little while to mix the old with the new, but we were able to find our groove and ended up on top again with our third regional championship,” said Jillian Albright.

Seniors: Cooper, Caitlynn; Hall, Hayley; Albright, Jillian; Herrera, Chelsea; Naveran, Payton.

Wrestling
Wrestling is one of Lowry’s best programs which is obvious. They have broken many state records like winning state six years in a row. They have also won 108 consecutive dual wins. Wrestling this year went to state but ended up taking second place. Next year Lowry is hoping to win state and start another streak.

Seniors: Bell, Trase; Grady, Madeline; Karchella, Christopher; Mentaberry, Shaun; Nelson, Nathan; Okuma, Cameron; Somers, Mikeas.

Boys Golf
The boy’s golf team had a struggling season compared to prior teams. Lowry appeared in state a couple of years before this year. This year’s team only had two individuals who went to state Zane Fifield and Steven Bosch. Neither of them was placed in state, however.

Seniors: McDade, James.

Softball (18-7, 3rd place)
The softball team had a great year this year. They started off with many wins and then finally gained their first loss in South Tahoe. The girls lost two out of the three games in South Tahoe, but that didn’t veer them off track of their main goal. The girls had many battles with Fallon some they won but Fallon unfortunately won the final game and ended Lowry’s hopes for state.

“All the girls made it a season I will never forget. We made great memories and played hard till the very end. I will miss it for sure,” said Ashlee Barron.

Seniors: Barron, Ashlee; Cooper, Caitlynn.

Swimming
Over the off-season, Lowry’s swim program picked up a new head coach Shelby Ruff. Ruff had a great first season sending a lot of her swimmers to zone and state. The team is losing many swimmers and is very eager to see what they can accomplish next season.

Seniors: Anderson, Angela; Beltran, Alexis; Duran-Salcedo, Marcos; Furnare, Cheyanna; Goldblatt, Rebekah; Jock, Matthew; Maher, Ian; Perkinson, Kelsea; Whitaker, Abbie; Yetter, Kailynn.

Track
The track team went to Carson for state. It was an eventful weekend for many of the Lowry runners.
“The team had 10 athletes place for state, seven girls and three boys. The team did well, we didn’t place as a team because we didn’t have many people to score the team points. I placed first in the high jump and got a new PR (personal record) which was 5’4. It was only myself and one other girl doing the high jump. We both had 5’4 but I have fewer mess ups which is why I took state,” said Kenadee Jeppsen.

Seniors: Albright, Jillian; Barber, Eric; Gallups, Liam; Somers, Mikeas.

Baseball
Lowry’s baseball program was looking for a better season than last year. The team did exactly that they improved their record but however, missed a chance to make playoffs which ended their season. Lowry could have made playoffs if they had swept Dayton. Going into the last week of regular season play all Lowry had to do was gain a couple of wins against Fernley and need Spring Creek to sweep South Tahoe.

“I couldn’t ask for much more on my last year, I had a great team with the kids that I grew up playing with. My favorite part though was how our team didn’t go softly. We played hard this year and that made for a memorable last season,” said Mickey Donovan.

Seniors: Marriott, Trey; Donovan, Michael; Schultz, Kyle; Rogers-Taylor, Jared; Shettler, Brian.
