Winterfest Week was cool

Wizards, brooms, and Snitches! Oh my! Lowry Winterfest 2016 was a hoot with the Harry Potter theme. The senior class was Slytherin, the juniors were Gryffindor, the sophomores were Ravenclaw, and the freshmen were Hufflepuff.

Monday kicked off Winterfest with a Harry Potter dress-up day, or some kids just wore a scarf. The pep assembly really got the students pumped up for the week with a video and introduced the Winterfest candidates. Two members from each class also participated in a Quidditch match, the junior class prevailed and beat the sophomores in the final round. The lunchtime activity was Harry Potter trivia and the Senior class won some class points by really knowing their Harry Potter facts.

On Monday night, Lowry gathered for the second annual dodgeball tournament held by the sophomore class. The tournament consisted of about twelve teams. As the night went on The Flying Gypsies and The Heroes battled for third place, with The Flying Gypsies winning. After that T.T.P. and The Dream Team fought for first. It was a heated fight as both teams had some great moments but in the end, T.T.P. won it all.

Tuesday was Hat Day, and everyone who wore a hat had to pay $1. All the proceeds went to help Mr. Todd Milton. The lunchtime activity was a licorice wand-making competition. Unfortunately, the evening event, Paint-a-Teacher was canceled.

Wednesday was Color War Day, and each class wore the color of their house. The lunchtime activity was Pin the Sock on Dobby.

“Yellow is a really hard color to find, but a lot of freshmen really pulled something together. I was surprised at the amount of participation the school had. We had a lot of school pride and it was just really cool to see people going all out,” said freshman Laura Hescock.

On Wednesday night, the National Honor Society held the annual Date Auction. Honor Society raised a grand total of $1,100. The date auction was held in the auditorium and 25 students were auctioned off.

Thursday was every lazy person’s favorite day; Robe/Pajama Day. The lunchtime activity was a scavenger hunt looking for Dobby’s sock. There was also a pep assembly Thursday and Christian Riddle and Ashlee Barron were crowned the Winterfest King and Queen. The dance team performed their Valentine’s Day dance and the boys’ basketball players were introduced by Chad Peters. Mrs. Topholm announced the highly anticipated unofficial class of the year standings, with Seniors in first with 1,425 points.

Winterfest week concluded on Friday with Buckaroo Blackout Day and most people dressed in some type of black attire. JV and varsity basketball teams played at home against South Tahoe for the Blackout game, and all the teams won. During the halftime show for the varsity boys game, the Honorary Buckaroo, Loren Hunewill, was recognized and given a plaque for helping Lowry make small changes to the school that impacted everyone in a big way, like paving the Senior parking lot.

The Winterfest dance took place on Saturday with DJ Oso and was hosted by the Senior class. The wrestlers had league duals at South Tahoe and all basketball teams played Dayton at Lowry.

Winterfest 2016 was definitely one to remember. Thank you Lowry Leadership for hosting an amazing week.
