Wrestling has come and gone, and the team has had a better run this year than anticipated. Lowry’s wrestling team wrestled for the State Championship on February 20 in Primm, Nevada. Lowry had 14 members compete at state, several of which made it into the final matches. Trase Bell took home his first state championship.
Cade Billingsley, Shaun Mentaberry, and Micah Somers all placed second in their weight class and Nate Nelson placed third. Overall, the team placed second with 88 points and won Academic All-State.
“We had a pretty good season, finishing with a solid performance at the State Tournament. We finished second behind a very talented Fallon team and were able to hold off and finish ahead of Spring Creek, who beat us at the Zone Tournament a week earlier. As I told the wrestlers when it was over, we made a lot of improvement from the beginning of the season and became one of the top teams in Nevada,” said coach John Brooks.
The wrestlers showed superb leadership and determination through these winter months. Even with having a lot of new members on the team, they pulled through and became one of the top teams in Nevada.
“All of the seniors served as good leaders for the team. Trase Bell is the only individual champion, but the others should not have any regrets about how they wrestled. They all represented Lowry well. Cade Billingsley got into the championship match and just fell short. I’m looking forward to what Cade, along with all the other returning wrestlers, will bring to the team next year,” explained Brooks.
