Lowry made it to the playoffs and lost to Spring Creek in the quarterfinals, 21-7. Lowry came off really well in the beginning, got a couple of good wins, and even held a streak for a while, but then slowly started struggling with injuries. They managed to push through.

The boys beat Truckee, South Tahoe, and North Valley for the first time in the program’s history. They were beating the undefeated Sparks 1-0 with 2 minutes to go until they tied Lowry. That tie was the only thing preventing Sparks from having a perfect season. In the zone tournament, Lowry defeated South Tahoe for the second time that season before losing to eventual zone champions Sparks in the semi-finals.

Seniors: Ryan Andrews, Octavio Ruiz, Anthony Cuevas, Celso Ruiz, Gabriel Monreal, Elias Arechiga, Angel Galarza, Aldahir Hernandez-Jaimes.

VARSITY VOLLEYBALL

They had a new coach along with some new players, so they were just trying to figure out how to play each other. At the beginning of the season, it was like they were playing an individual game, but they came together at the end.

Seniors: Kelcey Cooper, Ariana Galindo, Julianna Gonzalez, Dacotah Anelli.

CROSS COUNTRY MENS
Lowry has a great season this year for cross country. Many of the students had a great time for their season bests in the 5,000 meters. Jeremy Walker placed eleventh state this year for the 5000 meters with a time of 17:26.4 at the Lowry Invitational.

CROSS COUNTRY WOMENS
Lowry’s women’s cross country team ran fantastically this season. The team brought their best, and it showed; two of Lowry’s Women’s cross country placed at state. Jovi Kuskie placed 2nd in the state for the 5000 meters, and Adia Bengochea placed 20th in the state for the 5000 meters. Both are very impressive feats. Jovi had a time of 19:37.5, and Adia had a time of 21:10.8 at the Lowry Invitational. The rest of the team, including Kinsey Albisu Leibfried, Makayla Leveille, Taylor Hawkins, and Ryleigh Raabe, also did fantastic this season with impressive times of their own.

VARSITY BOYS BASKETBALL
The boy’s varsity basketball team ended their season with an overall record of 18-8 and a league record of 14-4. They beat Elko on the road, which was the first time since 2011. The boy’s basketball team made it to regionals and lost in overtime for the second year in a row in the semi-finals against Elko, 70-67.

Head coach Chad Peters was proud of this year’s team and what they accomplished.

“I couldn’t be more proud of the team and how well they were playing at the end of the year and all that they accomplished,” said Peters.

Every player works on improving themselves throughout the season, but JJ Backus worked on improving himself so that he and his team could be successful.

“I improved on learning what my team roles were to help the team be successful and fulfill our potential,” said Backus.

This year’s seniors include Max Mavity, Derek Espinoza, Michael Casalez, Chance Huitt, Preston Snow, Klay Garner, and Kobe Stoker.

VARSITY GIRLS BASKETBALL
The girls’ varsity basketball team ended its season with an overall record of 16-11 and a league record of 13-5. The girls’ basketball team made it to regionals and lost in the semifinals against Truckee 54-41. They grew as a team as the season went on.

Coach Melanie Thurmond is excited about the future of Lowry and the upcoming seasons with the team being so young. This year, they did really well and have great potential for years to come.
Sierra Maestrejuan played her last season of high school basketball this year and was pretty happy with the overall outcome.

“I think that our season was great overall! It didn’t end up how we wanted, but we kept getting better, and I had so much fun playing with my teammates,” said Maestrejuan.

Seniors: Sierra Maestrejuan, Carly Capellen.

VARSITY WRESTLING
Lowry Wrestling team had a really good season; they ended up finishing fourth overall. The team had a lot of young athletes; they had three seniors on the team: Taylor Corak, Cade Bell, and Eduardo Aguilar.

The team did really well because of all the conditioning that they had done, and it showed in the third round of a tight match. Although they didn’t win a state title, there were individuals who did, such as Corak and Anthony Peterson, both of whom won state titles, and Cole Mattson finished fourth. Corak was part of the 132 weight class, and Peterson was part of the 170. Coach Brant Corak hopes to come back better than ever next year.

The intensity and the extremely hard workouts that the team did were one of the reasons the team was so successful.

“We felt like our largest strength was our conditioning, and it usually showed in the third round of a tight match, ” said Corak. “We pride ourselves in outworking our opponents, and this year was no different.”

”We hope to bring all these athletes back next year and even get some work in during the offseason,” said Corak. “The ceiling is high and so are our expectations.”

VARSITY BASEBALL
The team hosted Spring Creek at home field on March 14, coming up short in the first game (15-14) but winning the second (8-7). The baseball boys have always been close, but this year they were even closer. Before COVID-19 hit, the Varsity boys had hoped to make it to the playoffs. “I’d like our team to make the playoffs for the first time in a long time,” said Parker. “This year, we are more of a team; we play for each other and not ourselves.”

This year’s seniors include Dominick Kelley, Michael Yarnell, Brooks Bergenheier, Jordan Parker, Joshua Leveille, Klay Garner, Gratian Dawson, and Tyler Neu.

VARSITY SOFTBALL
The varsity girls had only recently started playing, but started off with a great scrimmage in Sacramento. Varsity captains this year were Kelcey Cooper and Sierra Maestrejuan. Also, due to COVID-19, the girls’ season was cut short, but not before the girls. In the first weekend of league play, the girls brought home two wins. They beat Spring Creek 9-6 and won 12-2 the second time around.

This year’s seniors included Kelcey Cooper, Destiny Starkey, and Sierra Maestrejuan.
