The “Big Sonia” documentary was shown on May 21 at the Boys and Girls Club. Part of the movie was filmed in the halls of Lowry and shows some of the former students in a particular scene.
This documentary is about a woman named Sonia, who was the sole survivor in her family from the concentration camp in Auschwitz. Sonia is a 4’8” woman who is the last Holocaust survivor in Kansas City who courageously speaks publicly about her experiences.
Susie Palmer, a senior, attended the premiere.
“I’m not sure if I learned anything specific, just a real story about what was happening in Kansas while I was here in Nevada. Things that stuck out were the parts where Sonia talked about what she went through at the camps,” said Palmer.
Senior, Noah Walker, was another student who took advantage of the community event.
“First thing that stood out to me was my first impression of Sonia. She reminded me of my grandma since she was also from Europe and loved to make things and sell them to people,” said Walker. “She inspired people to not hate, but be kind towards one another. Sonia had a very compelling story of how she survived the Holocaust and what she witnessed.”
Walker left the premiere with a new perspective on his life.
“Her story made me feel more appreciative of everything. My family, friends, and the country I live in; the freedom that we have,” said Walker.
Since “Big Sonia” is hitting certain locations around the country for screenings, the movie is unfortunately not available to stream yet.
