Many people do not realize the danger of being in any rank in the justice system. Local police sergeant Mike Rangel gave an unheard perspective. Mike Rangel has been with the local police since 2011. As many people know, you must start at the lowest position in any occupation.
“I was fortunate enough to begin my career in the patrol division, making my way up the ranks. I began taking leadership courses, and with my previous law enforcement experience, I was able to pass the promotional test and was selected as Sergeant,” said Mike Rangel.
Sergeant Rangel doesn’t just stay at the office all the time. He sometimes has to do other duties.
“My patrol duties don’t change, only the amount of extra duties. If I am caught up with my extra duties, I’ll hit the road with other officers and provide guidance when needed,” added Rangel.
Having been with the police system for quite some time, Sergeant Rangel has found a form of duty that he enjoys.
“My favorite part of the job has to be leading and training officers. I feel a sense of pride knowing that I can help an officer get through a difficult situation. Along the same line, I truly enjoy helping people, especially when you know you have helped them through a life-changing situation,” said Rangel.
In contrast, Rangel doesn’t like one duty.
“I have to say that I don’t like disciplining personnel. This causes some animosity between the patrol division and supervision. The most important part for me is to build the officer’s morale and when I discipline, it may spiral down,” said Rangel.
Being a police sergeant isn’t easy. There are moments when lives are endangered.
“I was a rookie sergeant 3 years ago and the events of one late night I will never forget. We were attempting to locate a burglary suspect that forced his way into a house. Two of my officers met up with me and stated that they received word that the suspect was seen driving around town. So I told them apprehend the suspect and like 5 minutes later I heard ‘shots fired’ by one of the Officers.” said Rangel.
So for anyone out there who wants to join the law enforcement here is some advice.
“First, you must be willing to place the citizens before yourself. Courage your courage will be challenged; therefore you must have the fortitude to face dangerous situations.
