A Tribute to Gracie

By Jeanette Montero and Stella Hammargren Posted March 28, 2025

Our beloved golden retriever therapy dog, Gracie, who touched so many lives throughout her 13 years, will always be loved here at Lowry.  Gracie became an integral part of our community as the first therapy dog in the Humboldt County School District in 2016.  She leaves behind a legacy of love and compassion that will not be forgotten.  Gracie came into our lives when she was just 8 weeks old, and she quickly showed a remarkable ability to connect with people.  When she was four years old, Jeanette Montero began taking Gracie to the schools where she became a familiar and comforting presence.  For 8 years, Gracie accompanied Mrs. Montero to schools and classrooms

Where she offered cheer and companionship to the students and staff, beyond our local schools, Gracie’s impact extended throughout the community as she made regular appearances at the courthouse, specialty court programs, the senior center, Farm Day, the Reading and Robes Program, and countless mental health awareness events.

Gracie at one time had her own mental health advice column in the Humboldt Sun called “Dear Gracie”.  When the Family Support Center was first opened in Winnemucca, the founders started a campaign to raise money to help pay for “human” therapy services which was named “Gracie’s Fund”. Named after their very special therapy dog, “Gracie’s Fund” raised thousands of dollars to support mental health therapy for those who could not pay. It was evident that Gracie loved going to school each day, playing with the students, stealing the occasional tater tot from the cafeteria, and lying with the students in hopes of comforting them through any of their struggles.

On the weekends Gracie enjoyed running wild on the ranch she grew up on, spending time with her family. Gracie was a beacon of hope for many.  Her presence brought relief and warmth to countless individuals who were fighting their toughest battles.  The comfort she provided, the happiness she spread, and the lives she touched are a true testament to her incredible spirit and the love she had for everyone she met.

As we say goodbye to our Gracie we want to thank everyone who embraced her and allowed her to be a part of their lives. She will always hold a very special place in our hearts. We love you, Gracie. Your spirit will forever remain a guiding light for all those who had the privilege of knowing you.
