Redeeming credits after freshmen year can be a difficult thing to follow through. Especially if you don’t mature in the way you look at life and school. Ms. Alexis Mattson runs a Sophomore academic class that helps the kids who haven’t passed all of their classes or lack some credits from their freshman year.
“We’re trying to get them to understand that it’s important to pass school; to get through high school, to get their diplomas, get their degrees. So, it’s basically a support class so we can get them headed in the right direction,” said Mattson.
Improvement in the class so far has been good, for some, as far as effort goes.
“I see improvement in some of them. Some of them are starting to realize, as sophomores, that it’s important to graduate. So, this year, I had three pass every single one of their classes. A number of them passed a majority of their classes, so they’re starting to understand how important it is to get those credits because they already lack credits from their freshmen year,” said Mattson.
As much as Mattson would like to see more improvement, she still appreciates the genuineness of the few.
“Now, would I love for all of them to pass all of their classes? Absolutely. But, with improvement, with them passing some of their classes, that’s huge. Last year, some of them had F’s straight down the board. Now, they’re getting better grades, passing, and working a little harder,” said Mattson.
Students in that class have actually realized that the class benefits them in many ways.
“It’s made a difference. Before this class, I was struggling to raise my grades. But when they put me in this class, it helped me improve a lot. It’s a good environment,” said Juan Hernandez.
