October 5 an accidental shooting occurred in the visitors parking lot at Lowry High School.
While in the visitor’s parking lot after school waiting to pick up his sister, Andrew Sevy, a Lowry graduate, accidentally shot himself in the leg. He was on his way back from shooting practice at the target range and while waiting decided to unload his pistol. While pulling back the breech, the pistol accidentally discharged hitting him in the left leg.
According vice principal Doc Welter, “it [unloading his pistol on school grounds] was definitely against the law.”
Nevada law states that a person cannot carry a concealed weapon while on the premises of a public building that is located on the property of a public school.
In addition, Welter said, “he was transported to the hospital, he was conscious and didn’t appear to be a life-threatening injury….. no students were in the vicinity.”
Welter stressed that the shooting was accidental in nature and did not involve any current Lowry students.
“We take student safety as our highest priority, and that our students are, and will continue to be, safe while on our campus,” said Welter.
The matter is under investigation by the Winnemucca police department and will be forwarded to Humboldt County District Attorney.
