Many Lowry High School students were awarded for their academic excellence at the assembly put on by the Lowry Leadership class on May 20, 2009. There were 859 awards given during the assembly, as well as entertainment from The Winnemucca Basque Dancers, Lowry Percussion, and some of Lowry’s other talented students. The assembly was a little over an hour and a half and was very well attended. The theme of this assembly was a video game theme, and the motto was, “You’ve just hit level amazing.” The Lowry High School gym was decorated with numerous video game-oriented posters and props, as well as over 30 scrolls with all the award recipients listed on them.

Each student receiving an award got a T-shirt with the theme on it, as well as a certificate describing the award. Seventy-eight bonds, ranging from 100 to 400 dollars, were given out to certain students who especially excelled in the subject. These bonds were donated by the Mining Foundation. As well as the bonds, Burdette’s donated 13 letterman’s jackets.

The GPA awards and special student awards, the Valedictorian and Salutatorian of the 2009 graduating class were announced. Katherine Granath, valedictorian, and Samantha Buttram, Salutatorian, were honored toward the end of the assembly and will be recognized at the graduation ceremony.

Katy said, “I’ve worked really hard for this and to be recognized is a great honor. I really liked the way they announced it at the academic assembly because it gave me even a greater feeling of accomplishment.”

Lowry High School could not have asked for a greater academic assembly.
