Fake News: New smokers’ corner receives funding for improvements

Johnson and Co. construction out of Elko has recently purchased the land across from the high school from Great Basin College, forcing ‘smoker’s corner’ to relocate.

According to HR secretary Hannah Kafe, the company hopes to build a Starbucks on the land. The store will be small enough, however, that Lowry students will still be allowed to park in the Buckaroo parking lot.

Some students who regularly visit the corner are outraged with the move, others are very excited about the change in scenery.

“I don’t understand why we had to move. We aren’t hurting anyone. That corner has been the one place I could grab a smoke before class my entire high school career,” said one student. “I’m really mad to see it go.”

“I really don’t mind the change, in fact, I’m pretty excited,” argued another student. “Being off the corner makes us less in the public eye. I always felt so judged standing on the corner when all the parents came to pick up their kids. We were always getting stared at.”

Smoker’s Corner has been moved onto Great Basin Avenue, just outside the fence of the senior parking lot. If you park over there you probably noticed the blue park bench sitting out there, which is where they have staked their claim.

The school has set aside $15,000 to improve the area in which the new corner is located. An inside source says they plan on laying down concrete and installing a pavilion with benches and tables for the kids to sit at.

The administration hopes that those changes will be done before the start of the next school year.
