The girls’ golf team had an amazing season this year. The girls finished second in the northern region and qualified for state. Senior Katelyn Cassinelli placed third individually with an overall score of 163 (79 on day one and 84 on the second), and the team placed fifth with a score of 826.
Most of the old members from last year returned (Jordyn Medicine Cloud, Katelyn Cassinelli, Kailani Rodriguez Urban, Lainey Novacek, and Bailey Miller), and two girls joined this year: senior Presley Hayes and sophomore Charlotte Allan.
“The girl’s focus on getting to state this year definitely helped in improving their awareness of what is needed to succeed in the game of golf,” said assistant coach Laurie Pickett. “Their mental strength in not letting a bad shot compromise their game was admirable.”
The girls tried their hardest this year and had to play in extreme weather and heavy rain. During the Elko tournament, the girls got rained out while playing and the tournament was canceled.
“The tournament in Elko was hard to play through,” said Jordyn Medicine Cloud. “It was pouring outside, but we kept going. I was really sad but also relieved when the coaches called us in after the rain didn’t lighten up after an hour.”
While these girls played through some tough times, they also had many highlights. Kailani Rodriguez’s favorite memory from this season was when the girls won first place as a team during their home tournament.
“My favorite memory has to be when we won first in Winnemucca,” said Rodriguez. “It was a really good moment to see all of our work out on the course pay off at our last home tournament.”
Senior Presley Hayes was a returning Lowry girl’s golf player. She played golf her freshman year at Lowry but moved to Spring Creek the following year. She decided to return to Lowry and finish her senior year where she grew up.
“I think coming back this year was a great decision,” said Hayes. “I love being around the people I grew up with again and being able to go to state this year was a great experience even with the bad weather.”
Katelyn Cassinelli and Presley Hayes were named to the all-state first team, and junior Lainey Novacek was named to the All-State Second Team.
