Girls varsity hosts playoff game to cap season

The varsity girl’s soccer team has had a great season and won 16 games. Coach Chris Entwistle saw a lot of growth in the girls and loves seeing how well they work together.

Senior Damiena Mentaberry has enjoyed getting to know the other girls on the team and has gotten along well with the other girls.

“My team is so strong individually and even stronger when we play together, we have all created such strong relationships and a great environment for this season,” said Mentaberry. “The worst part of my season was it coming to an end, this season has been so full of support and love from all the girls.”

Mentaberry has also had a great season with five assists helping her teammates.

“My season was very successful this year and full of improvements in my skill and bonds with my teammates,” said Mentaberry.

Sophomore Elyza Sirotek thinks the season has gone well and has also gotten close with her teammates.

“I think the best part of the season was getting to know the girls better and getting close to each other,” said Sirotek. “We work pretty well as a team both on and off the field.”

Junior Callie Paulsen had fun on varsity and had a great team.

“The best part of the season was being able to make a great team this year while still having fun,” said Paulsen.

Paulsen does not think the season was hard and her team played well.

“Some of the lowlights were losing two of our games, but the season was not difficult, we all worked well together which helped us win our games,” said Paulsen. “To celebrate a win, we post pictures by the scoreboard.”

The team progressed throughout the season and their record reflected that.

“I love seeing the growth in our players and watching them improve week-to-week,” said Entwistle. “But if I had to pick something specific, it would be our girls’ ability to work, grow, and bounce back to avenge our only league losses to Fallon and Elko. The girls knew those two early season losses did not demonstrate their best effort and did not reflect who they were. They knew if we wanted to host a playoff game, we had to do better.”

Entwistle was glad to see how much the girls had improved and how determined they were to try their best.

“With a tie versus Elko, a win versus Fallon, and some help from Spring Creek (tying Elko), our girls achieved their goal and hosted a playoff game for the first time in over 15 years and qualified for the semi-finals for the first time in an even longer time,” said Entwistle.

Entwistle thinks that the girls work hard while also having a great time.

“Their ability to bounce between serious and fun so seamlessly… they would laugh, joke, and have fun as a team, then immediately switch to battle mode,” said Entwistle. “They would work hard when it was time to work hard and have fun (a lot of it) when it was time to have fun.”
