The Robotics Club consists of 17 members As the Robotics team heads towards their first competitions, Coach Scott Santos is ready to see his most experienced members compete.
“I’m just excited to see how my older two teams compete this year,” said Santos. “This is the first time that I’ve had seniors with four years of experience in robotics.”
Santos expects the older teams to make it to the state competition.
“The older two teams just went to Ely, one team I do believe earned their qualification for state,” said Santos.
Santos also expects success from his younger teams and has noted the fresh talent growing in his newer members.
“I’m excited about the new talent we have in our program this year on the younger two teams,” said Santos.
Senior Caleb Sanders is hopeful for future competitions and knows his four years within the club will help him succeed.
“It should go a lot better because we have a lot more experience,” said Sanders. “We’re a lot further ahead than we were in the past couple of years.”
Sanders looks forward to competing with his team’s robots and particularly enjoys knowing he played a role in building them.
“It’s a lot of fun to go in and compete against everyone else with something you were a part of making,” said Sanders.
Johnny Lozano, a first-year robotics student, predicts that his upcoming competition will offer him much to see and learn.
“I look forward to seeing everyone, all the other competitors, and learning new things about our robot,” said Lozano.
The robotics team had a previous competition and Lozano came out with some new information.
“We learned which teams are better and how to strategize [against] better teams,” said Lozano.
Going into this next competition Lozano expects a few different things.
“This one is going to be different because we’ve upgraded our robot, and we’ve learned more strategies,” said Lozano. “We’ve got everything down.”
The Robotics teams’ first competition will be hosted by Lowry on January 11. The Last Chance tournament will be held at Doral Academy of Northern Nevada (Reno, NV) on February 8. Lastly, The Nevada V5RC State Championship will be hosted by Green Valley High School (Henderson, NV) on March 8th.
