A victory over Lovelock Friday, August 28, left Lowry’s JV football team with high hopes and standards for this season.

“We improved a lot from last year. There’s a good chance of going undefeated, we just have to stay focused and not get overconfident,” said sophomore Gus Duncan.

The Buckaroos quickly built a lead, they wouldn’t relinquish. The final was 46-6.

Seven minutes into the game, Duncan scored the Bucks’ first touchdown on a 36-yard run.

On Pershing County’s next possession, sophomore Bobby Hoenck recovered a fumble at the 26-yard line. The lowry offense converted the turnover into another score.

Pershing scored its only points of the game in the first quarter. However, Lowry quickly responded with a score of its own when sophomore Troy Jock reached pay dirt on an 11-yard run.

Defense for the Bucks held up against the Lovelock offense, keeping the Mustangs from scoring in the second half.

In the fourth quarter, sophomore Brett Hammon scored a touchdown on a 30-yard run.

But the Bucks weren’t done yet. After the Bucks recovered Lovelock’s fumble, sophomore Kevin Boyle made a quick run of 24 yards.

“Kevin’s run was great with an insane spin,” said injured player, sophomore Jonathan Landa, who was hurt earlier in the season during the scrimmage in Elko.

Lowry added two more late touchdowns one by sophomore Ryan Nicholson and another by Duncan, to end the scoring at 46-6.

“I think they’re a lot better team than that score shows. We forced them [Lovelock] to put the ball down, they fumbled several times,” said coach John Brooks.

The team’s frosh quarterback, Michael Billingsley, said, “[This game was] a good confidence booster for the start of the season.”
