Movie review: ‘Donnie Darko’ (2001)

This year marks the ten-year anniversary of the psychological drama, Donnie Darko. The film features Jake and Maggie Gyllenhaal, Patrick Swayze, and Drew Barrymore. The film is set in the 1980s in a suburban area. It’s a movie about a schizophrenic teenager named Donnie Darko whose actions are influenced by a man in a bunny suit named Frank that he met in his dreams after Frank helps him escape being killed in a bizarre accident. Frank informs Darko that the world will end at the end of the month.

Frank shows Darko how to time travel and tells him to commit a series of crimes such as flooding his school and arson. Darko is convinced that he must find out why the world is ending and figure out how to reverse it. Along the way, Darko falls in love with a new girl at school who is enchanted by his intellectuality and eccentricity. On the final night of the world Frank’s world and Darko’s world collide to produce a conclusion that leaves the audience wondering exactly what the story means.

Donnie Darko is a must-see film.
