Lillian Moravec was Humboldt County’s winner of Poetry Out Loud for 2013. In a competition held February 21 at Lowry High School, Lilly won with her dramatic recitations of “Cold Blooded Creatures” and “Luke Havergal.” Moravec placed third last year behind senior Rachel French, who was this year’s second place winner. First time competitor Miranda Lausch, a sophomore, placed third this year.

Moravec is a junior at Lowry High School who is headed for a career in Fine Arts. She is currently enrolled in two arts classes, along with her core classes. Her hobbies are dance, writing, and guitar playing. She has been involved in a variety of activities, including Art Club, Key Club, and a local Dance Ensemble.

Poetry Out Loud is a national competition with money prizes at the school, state and national levels. The national champion wins a $20,000 college scholarship. Poetry Out Loud meets every Wednesday at lunchtime in Vicki Meissner’s classroom. The Lowry club has morphed into a performing arts club named “Psyche,” which includes a motley group of creative writers, singers, dancers, and artists. The club held a poetry slam last November, thanks to the hospitality of Global Coffee. They are planning other events and fundraisers with an ultimate goal of attending a Shakespeare Festival in the summer of 2014.
