Review: ‘The Big Bang Theory’

Math, science, history, unraveling the mystery, and it all started with a big bang! Back in September, 2007, the best comedy television show broadcasted its first episode. Entertainment took a large step with this show, bringing comedy with intelligence. I only started watching this show two years ago, but it’s been my favorite since I began.

The main characters of this show are Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons), Leonard Hofstadter (Johnny Galecki), Howard Wolowitz (Simon Helberg), Raj Koothrapali (Kunal Nayyar), and Penny (Kaley Cuoco). These great people have made this show for six years, now starting their seventh season. Other characters include Leslie Winkle (Sara Gilbert), who is an enemy of Sheldon Cooper, and at times a lover of Leonard, and other times Howard. Then there is Bernadette Rostenkowski (Melissa Rauch) who is a co-worker of Penny as a waitress, and then a micro-biologist. She becomes part of the group after Penny sets her and Howard up on a date. Amy Farrah Fowler later becomes part of the group after Leonard, Howard, and Raj look on a dating website to try and find Sheldon a girlfriend, as a joke, and soon realize that they are perfect for each other, although Sheldon frequently claims “She is a girl, who is a friend, but she is not my “girlfriend”.”

This show has come up with many new phrases, such as Bazinga, which Sheldon uses when he announces a joke or a prank. There is also the addition of Rock, paper, scissors, Rock, paper, scissors, lizard, and Spock. “Scissors cut paper, paper covers rock, rock crushes lizard, lizard poisons Spock, Spock smashes scissors, scissors decapitates lizard, lizard eats paper, paper disproves Spock, Spock vaporizes rock, and as it always has been, rock crushes scissors.” This addition has been announced a few times in the show, although it was created by Sam Kass.

There is also, “Soft Kitty.” This is a song that Sheldon’s mother sang to him when he was sick, and he now makes Penny take care of him and sing him the song. “Soft kitty, warm kitty, little ball of fur, happy kitty, sleepy kitty, purr purr purr.”

This comedy is amazing. It is delightful and funny but in an intelligent, geeky kind of way. Hopefully, someday all of you will at least watch one episode.
