Rodeo season in full swing

Rodeo season is on its way and contestants in all events are prepared. The first rodeo practice of the season was Wednesday, March 23, the practice was mainly for the rough stock riders for bull riding, saddle bronc, and bareback. At practice, Lowry High School Rodeo Club has five bulls and out of the five, one belongs in a rodeo, due to the talent the bull has. All of the bulls are owned by rough stock coaches, Jerry Harper and Glen Montero.

When the practice first began, Junior Cole Hatcher didn’t have very much luck with his horse.

Hatcher said, “It was one of the worst horses I’ve ever rode as soon as I came off the horse, the horse fell down”.

The coaches for the Winnemucca High School Rodeo Team have found out that at almost all of the rodeos one-third of the bull riders come from Humboldt County. Winnemucca has a good rodeo club with the help of its coaches and parents. Most of the other towns near Humboldt County such as Fernley, Battle Mountain, and Lovelock, don’t have a high school rodeo club. High school students and home school students come from different places to come to the Winnemucca high school rodeo practices.

Senior Courtney Sanchez does many events in rodeo, however, her favorite is goat tying, Sanchez said, “I love the adrenaline rush and going fast on my horse.” Sanchez’s best record in goat tying is 8.1 seconds; her best time in calf roping is 2.9 seconds.

“I always say go hard or go home,” said Sanchez.
