School zones need to increase speed limits

School zone speed limits are too slow. Increasing the speed limits in school zones would cause fewer wrecks, less traffic, and fewer complaints.

Before and after school, the speed limit is 15 mph. Many people are rushing to get to their child or work and often don’t pay attention while trying to get where needed. A study shows that 39 percent of fatal wrecks in Nevada happen while going under 35 mph and the other 61 percent included intoxication, texting and driving, speeding, and car failure.

By increasing the speed of school zones to 20 mph we could minimize traffic that often piles up as many school zones in Winnemucca are very close, and hundreds of parents are trying to get their children either to or from school.

Many teenagers would agree that the speed limit is too slow.

“I think that increasing the school zone speed limit would help everyone out. We could get places faster and with less traffic. The city of Winnemucca should highly consider this. Winnemucca is a growing city and the traffic will only get worse,” said a junior that has been driving for two years.

Fewer complaints would be heard if the speed limit were to increase by 5 mph because everyone could get where they were going on time while continuing to practice traffic safety laws.
