SkillsUSA is a national student organization involving more than 300,000 students. Recently the Lowry SkillsUSA club, advised by Mr. Andrew Meyer, competed at state events ranging from Power Equipment Technology to Masonry.
Advisor Andrew Meyer was impressed with the students’ success.
“This was by far the best results we have had since my tenure as SkillsUSA advisor,” said Meyer.
For most who competed at Lowry, it was more for CTE classes like welding, fabrication, etc. Overall the competition covers industrial jobs.
Kyle Young, a part of the three-man welding fabrication project reported that his team did very well in the competition. Although Kyle felt that he did decent as an individual, it was most definitely a team effort. As a team, he felt they worked well together and came out with a gold.
the team was required to build an item that’s on a blueprint spec. They are required to read the blueprint and build the item directly according to it. They have to go off of the actual welding symbols and signs.
Senior Joe Mullis competed in Welding Sculpture and finished second. His entry was a crane building a bridge that he had worked on since the beginning of the school year. The silver medal also earned him a $7000 scholarship to a tech school. However, he is unsure of his career path at this point, even though he does want to go into welding.
“I want to take my skills to college with me,” said Mullis. He may, however, enter the Navy for underwater welding.
