Swimmers continue to improve

Lowry’s swim team had a major change this season. They picked up a new head coach who is also a Lowry science teacher, Mrs. Shelby Ruff. Coach Ruff has changed many things.

“Our focus has shifted from focusing on individual events to making the team more well-rounded as a whole. Our athletes are not only doing more conditioning, both in and out of the pool, but we have also been working on bringing everyone up to speed on all four competitive strokes. Many swimmers are finding their niche in specific events or strokes that they may have not trained for or even learned previously. While it has been a cultural shock for returning swimmers, almost half the team has qualified for Regionals so far with a total of 39 qualifying times and an average of 25 season best times have been recorded each meet,” said coach Ruff.

As the swim team headed to Carson on April 23, they were looking to improve their overall times and individual times.

“I dropped three seconds off my backstroke,” said Hallie Caratzola.

On the contrary, the swim team wanted to improve on all of their races.

“I could have done better on my events by cutting down my times,” said Dave Anderson

Overall the team did very well this weekend adding another win to their season.

“We won our meet, and we also had more qualifying times,” added Caratzola.

Lowry’s swim team looks like they will be headed to regionals with major advantages due to all the hard work they have put in over the season.
