Track is among one of the most competitive sports in high schools across the country, and Lowry track is no different. With a team of about ninety students, it is the largest sports team in the school.

“I oversee the show,” stated head coach Shaun Murgel. Murgel coaches long, triple, and high jump, but also shadows every event. He expects to see many people compete and many victories in store.

Besides Murgel, there are two returning coaches: sprinting coach Kristee Brinkerhoff and pole-vaulting coach Gary Echeverria.

Brinkerhoff stated, “I think we have some potential this year.” Brinkerhoff is excited to see how freshmen from last year have improved and to continue to see the improvement among the older athletes. She hopes the relay teams will make it to state for the second year in a row.

Dawn Lucas, who was a volunteer coach last year, is the official distance and hurdle coach for this year. “I am hoping that all of my athletes will reach their highest potential.” Lucas is excited to train her runners, who, she feels are driven.

Taua Cabatbat is the newest coach, with this year marking the commencement of his track coaching career. Cabatbat feels that he has a good mixture of new and old athletes. He coaches the shotput and discus athletes and is also the assistant coach.

This season, track has had an amazing start with students such as Emelia Legarza, Christian Echeverria, Tyrell Henriod, and Jasmine Cisneros placing first in their events in the Lowry and Sparks meets during March. The coaches expect to see more wins in-store and are hoping for a great season.
