The varsity girl’s basketball team has won three 3A state championships in the past three years. Alyssa Jones who has taken over as head coach this season is using her previous experience as assistant coach to push the team further. Jones was on the JV team her freshman and sophomore years (2011-2013) then the varsity basketball team for her last two years at Lowry (2013-2015). She returned as a teacher at Winnemucca Junior High School.
“Even though we had some very important members of our team graduate last year, this year there are new faces looking to step up and fill those roles,” said Coach Jones. “I am excited to see who will step up to the challenge.”
The girls strive to keep the current legacy alive and the work they are putting in shows in practice and the few games they have played.
“I think this season will go pretty well overall knowing we are 3-peat state champs,” said Lexi Hernandez. “Having that title will push us to make the best of the season.”
A strong start at Douglas winning 56-44 set the tone for the rest of the season. The team has focused on bettering themselves both on and off the court, a sense of comradeship is needed when you are shooting as high as these girls are.
Senior Allison Green has been on the varsity team for the 2023-2024 season as well as the 2024-2025.
“There’s a lot of great new people on the team this year with so much potential,” said Green. “The girls clearly care about what we are doing and want to work at it.”
By bettering themselves on and off the court they are confident that this will be yet another successful season.
“We’ve worked so hard at getting better already this season,” said Macy Whitted. “I have no doubt that we’ll have a great season.”
