The 2009 Video Music Awards held in New York City awed people all across the country. There were many up and downs throughout the show leaving the viewers speechless and at times booing.

The show was in dedication to the remembrance of “The King of Pop” Michael Jackson. Michael Jackson’s sister Janet started the show by performing some of Jackon’s famous moves with a slide show of him playing on the big screen behind her.

There were many great performances from artists such as Lady Gaga, her creative performance ended with her dripping in fake blood. Taylor Swift showed a unique performance by using the New York City Subway. Beyonce, Green Day, and Muse also gave outstanding performances. Pink sang her song “Sober” while flying above the stage performing acrobatics.

The big controversy of the night was when Swift was awarded the Moonman for “Best Female Video Of the Year.” As she took the stage to give her speech, Kanye West took the microphone from her hands and said Beyonce’s “ Single Ladies” music video was the best one of the year. After he handed the mic back, Swift was speechless, and the crowd was booing in her favor as she exited the stage.

Some award recipients for the night were Lady Gaga, Beyonce, Green Day, Taylor Swift, Eminem, T.I./ Rihanna, Britney Spears, Beastie Boys, and Matt & Kim.

The show ended with Jay Z and Alicia Keys performing “Empire State Of Mind.” The song was perfectly chosen for the city that just endured the eighth anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
