The girl’s freshman basketball team’s game against Elko resulted in a victory with a couple of players who made a real difference.
Coach Larry Renteria had a tough decision to make but decided on the two girls who stood out and brought something to the game.
“In the end, Josie and Elyza stood out against Elko,” said Renteria. “While Josie brings experience and the ability to calm the team, Elyza is brand new to basketball and is learning the game at an incredible pace.”
Coach Renteria recognizes their ability to work together when playing defense against the opposing team.
“Working together they can create havoc against the opposing team’s offense,” said Renteria. “They are both aggressive, work well to pressure the ball create steals, and sacrifice personal scoring for the benefit of the team. Between their athleticism, their ability to recognize their roles on the team, and excel at those roles they have been a force to be reckoned with on the court.”
Josie Jenkins is surprised that she was chosen as Student-Athlete of the Week because of her recent performance but feels she has gotten better over time.
“Kind of surprised because our last games I haven’t been playing that good,” said Jenkins. “I think I’ve gotten better. Renteria is a really good coach and teaches us a lot of new things.”
Jenkins enjoys the idea of basketball and the feeling of scoring a point and winning a game.
“I just like the concept of it, obviously not the running part very much but the feeling of making a basket or winning with your team.”
