As I’m making my daily commute to third period I notice a girl wearing a crop top. I hear another girl say “Put a shirt on, it’s dress code!” For those of you who don’t know what a crop top is, a crop top is half of a shirt. You could wear one with a high-waisted skirt or shorts. It shows a half inch of your stomach and they can either be long sleeve or short.

I personally love crop tops, and I don’t think anyone finds a half inch of your stomach ‘sexy’. If it’s hot outside, wear a crop top. If it’s cold outside, wear a crop top. There is nothing wrong with expressing your fashion sense or who you are, regardless of what society says. Most schools prohibit crop tops because of how much skin they reveal. In my opinion, crop tops are cute and stylish. Some people don’t feel comfortable wearing them because of their insecurities, but I think anyone could rock one any day. Strut your stuff. Anyone can wear a crop top, including boys.

All over the nation, school administrators enforce a school dress code and crop tops always seem to be on that list of ‘what not to wear’ because it’s “too revealing” or a “distraction” but instead of teaching girls to cover up, we should teach boys to stop sexualizing women.

In Toronto, Canada a student, Alexi Halket, changed views across the nation on crop tops with a hashtag on Twitter, #CropTopDay. Halket was sent to the vice principal’s office and was told that she was dressed ‘inappropriately.’ Instead of covering up, she wore something similar the next day. Over 5,000 people across the city wore crop tops in support.

Wear what you want to wear because it might just change some people’s view of it. Be confident and express yourself. Have fun with your style, or even start a trend.
