What to watch: ‘Gilmore Girls’

First aired October 5, 2000, this witty, dramedy may be the best show to binge-watch and rewatch multiple times. Despite being released almost 18 years ago, it has managed to hold up incredibly well over the years. This series has seven seasons plus a revival called, “A Year in the Life” released in November 2016.

“Gilmore Girls” is about a single mother, Lorelai Gilmore, played by Lauren Graham, and 16-year-old daughter, Rory Gilmore played by Alexis Bledel, who have an incredibly enviable bond. At the age of 16, pregnant and extremely independent, Lorelai fled to the (fictional) small town of Stars Hollow, Connecticut to raise her daughter and to get away from her dreadful, rich parents. Lorelai owns the town’s bed-and-breakfast, the Dragonfly Inn, with best friend/chef Sookie, played by Melissa McCarthy, and copes with weekly dinners with her eccentric, well-off parents Richard (Edward Herrmann) and Emily Gilmore (Kelly Bishop), who always have something to say about their daughter’s life. Rory, too smart for her public high school in town and having a dream of going to Harvard, ultimately gets admitted into the prestigious and exclusive Ivy League feeder school, Chilton Preparatory Academy, (ironically with the help of her grandparents) where dreams of Harvard can most definitely come true.

Once you begin this series, it will become obvious that Lorelai has an obsession with coffee and Rory can’t get her face out of the books. Those are just some of the little things that make this worth watching. This series will make you smile, laugh, cry, and be angry all in one episode. At least that’s how it was for me.

Also, with seven seasons and a revival, this series will keep you entertained if you’re looking for something to binge-watch. This series can, and will, live up to your expectations if you’re looking for something with an unpredictable storyline and a good laugh once in a while. It’s available to stream on Netflix.
