Whatever happened to lockers?

Whatever happened to lockers?

They’re all around us every day and are an established part of a high school. Lockers have been in high schools for years. Over time, the need for lockers has disappeared, or have they? Whatever happened to lockers?

Lockers are common in high schools, helping students take some weight off their shoulders with the amount of books and other supplies, but since COVID hit, lockers have been shelved, leaving some students disappointed.

“I personally don’t like having the lockers taken away because I think it [lockers] gives us a good a good place to put our stuff that we can’t carry,” said Adelyn Quirarte.

While some students are glad that the lockers are gone.

“Personally, I like that the school doesn’t use locker because it helps keep the hallways from getting even more crowded,” said Elia Vasquez. “With everyone carrying their stuff, there’s less stopping and blocking in the middle of the halls.”

While this change isn’t a big deal, it still ends some old trends. For example, decorating your locker, a trend to help express yourself and organize, is now a thing of the past.

There’s also a lack of excitement and school spirit that comes with the loss of lockers. There’s no longer that curiosity of what locker you’ll get and testing your luck to see if you had any friends as neighbors and the social quality of talking with friends around their lockers before school and in passing time.

Any trend or tradition dealing with the lockers is also gone and can only be found in the memories of the older classes.

In the end, the unavailability of lockers leaves students with sore backs and questions about the disappearance of the high school locker.
