Career Profile: Car Salesman

Going into the car sales business isn’t always the most rewarding job. Car salesmen have an extremely bad reputation among people who have experienced buying a car.

Delong Ford’s Jason Blatzheim elaborated on why he thinks car salesmen have such a bad reputation.

“I would say that people hate car salesmen, or at least some car salesmen because they get nervous when they spend a lot of money. There’s a lot of anxiety around buying a car and people drag that into the experience,” Blatzheim said.

There are a lot of extremely challenging components to being a car salesman. Just like in any sales business, you will have to deal with customers, and some aren’t always the nicest to spend your time with. In another way, Blatzheim says that it can be extremely exasperating when the customer isn’t concerned about the things they should be when purchasing a new vehicle.

“I would say that the hardest part about my job is that everyone in the internet age is increasingly focused on buying things as cheap as possible and not as concerned as they should be about small-town businesses and people like myself trying to continue to make a living,” Blatzheim said.

Although the car sales business can be tough, it also comes with its perks. Blatzheim says that many rewarding things have to do with his job.

“I think that the most rewarding thing about my job would be dealing with some customers over and over again to the point where I feel like we’re friends, or at least we know who each other is. I sell a car to them, I sell a car to their kids, their brother, their aunt, or their friend. That part is rewarding, dealing with the same people over and over again and feeling like there’s a relationship,” said Blatzheim.

Although there are a lot of ups and downs in being in the car sales business, it’s a good job to have that requires many skills that you will be able to use outside of work as well. You have to work with people well, use math, and so much more. And even though car salesmen may have a bad reputation among some, it’s better to have to deal with them instead of walking everywhere.
