Movie Review: ‘Nowhere Boy’

“Nowhere Boy” is a film that follows the early life of John Lennon and tells how The Beatles came to be.

In the movie, you discover many things about John Lennon that you never knew. Like the fact that Lennon wished he were Elvis when he was a teen. Or that his mother had abandoned him at a very young age and he was living with his aunt Mimi.

The story begins with Lennon’s uncle passing away. At the funeral, Lennon sees a woman that he soon comes to know as his mother. They spend quite a bit of time together after Lennon is kicked out of school and later runs away from Mimi’s house. She teaches him to play the guitar and they sing and dance and everything is peaches and gravy until the truth is revealed about why she didn’t keep her son.

In the midst of all this, Lennon is trying to start a Rock ‘n’ Roll group with his friends from school. They play a couple of small shows as The Quarrymen and pick up new members along the way.

There are plenty of surprising details discovered as the story continues, such as how the band met Paul McCartney and what a rebellious daredevil Lennon really was.

This movie is not for the soft-hearted. It was made in 2009 in the UK so it goes without saying that there is foul language, drug references, an incredible amount of underage smoking and drinking, and awkward sexual scenes. That being said, it is a wonderful way to get to know John Lennon and how he came to be the wonderful person he was.
