Movie Review: The Conjuring

“The Conjuring” is a horror film directed by James Wan that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

In 1971, Roger Perron (Ron Livingston) and Carolyn Perron (Lili Taylor) moved into an old farmhouse in Harrisville, Rhode Island with their five daughters. Excited to move into their new home, the family settles in, with everything going well on the first day.

The family dog, Sadie, refuses to walk into the home so is forced to sleep outside. The next morning, Carolyn wakes up with a big, mysterious bruise and one of her daughters finds Sadie dead by the house.

Strange things continued to happen for the next couple of days. Carolyn noticed that all of the clocks would stop working at 3:07 every morning, so she would have to reset them.

One of the nights, Roger and Carolyn’s daughters, Nancy and Christine are attacked by an unseen figure. These mysterious things continue to happen while Roger is away in Florida and Carolyn begins to hear various giggling voices and clapping sounds. Hearing a loud crash, Carolyn goes to check what the noise was and all of the picture frames had been shattered on the stairs.

Later that night, one of their daughters, Cindy, was awakened after sleepwalking into her sister’s room. Cindy sees a spirit on top of the wardrobe, which attacks Cindy’s sister, Amanda.

After many strange incidents, Carolyn decides to contact Ed Warren (Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine Warren (Vera Farmiga) who are paranormal investigators.

After searching the home, the Warrens discovered that the house once belonged to a witch named Bathsheba, who killed and sacrificed her week-old child to the devil and then killed herself. Bathsheba then cursed anyone who would take her land.

Carolyn later gets possessed by the spirit of Bathsheba, to the point where she tries to kill her daughters. Lorraine distracts Carolyn by sharing a memory that she has with her family so that she won’t kill her daughters.

With the help of Lorraine distracting Carolyn, Ed can complete an exorcism on her, saving her and her daughters.

“The Conjuring” is one of the best scary movies of 2014 and is the perfect movie to watch around the time of Halloween. The movie gave me constant chills and I highly recommend watching it.
