Review: “My Love Is Cool”

Up and coming British rock band, Wolf Alice, released their debut studio album in the United States on June 23, 2015. The band—which consists of Ellie Rowsell, Joff Oddie, Theo Ellis, and Joel Amey—took their time on releasing their album “My Love Is Cool”. It took them the timespan of five years to release “My Love Is Cool” because they wanted to make the album to the best of their abilities.

All the tracks in “My Love Is Cool” flow together; no single track sticks out. There is a good variety between the fast paced rock songs to the serenity of the slower alternative songs.

The second track on the album “Bros” has Rowsell singing about a friend from childhood who needs to let her hair down more often, making some references to their youth together. “Remember when we cut our hair / Both looked like boys / But we didn’t care”.

Fourth track “Moaning Lisa Smile”, previously released on their EP “Creature Songs”, peaked number nine on US Alternative. The song has a slower time signature featuring a grungy sound and heavy sound distortion in the guitars.

The fifth track “You’re a Germ” picks up the pace on beats per minute; the song is like a burst of teenage hormones. Rowsell once again provides the lead vocals; but Oddie, Ellis, and Amey provide their vocals for the chorus, resulting in a “head-banging” song.

There are a total of thirteen tracks, including a hidden track. All the tracks are put cohesively together; the amount of energy that exhumes through their songs show the passion they had creating “My Love Is Cool”.  It is one of the best albums of 2015, as seen that they are nominated for best rock performance for the 2016 Grammy awards. Do yourself a favor and buy this album.
