Hot Summer movies

By Karen Esparza Posted June 4, 2014

The season for blockbusters is here! Summer is fast approaching and that means more free time to sleep in, go on a hike, work out (yeah, right), bake a cake, write some poetry, for seniors get a job or two, and watch a couple dozen movies. This season is overflowing with highly anticipated sequels, inspirational films, hilarious comedies, and a movie that is literally history in the making.

“22 Jump Street”
Schmidt and Jenko are back in action, but this time they’re headed for the big leagues: college.
Splitting up to infiltrate both the football team and the hipster side of campus takes its toll, as a wedge begins to drive in between the dynamic duo. Not only must they crack the case, but they also have to fight to save their friendship. But, if these two can figure out a way to keep it together and survive college, this experience could be the greatest in their lives.

“Dawn of the Planet of the Apes”
The struggle to remain the Earth’s dominant species continues as Caesar’s growing nation of genetically evolved apes is threatened by a band of human survivors. After beating the deadly virus that was released a decade earlier, the humans seek to maintain a fragile peace with the apes. The truce is short-lived and both sides are driven to violence and the battle-to-end-all-battles begins. So pick your side and watch as the showdown unfolds.

“Boyhood”
A cinematic experience that is legendary and one-of-a-kind, no matter the revenue from ticket sales. This film is twelve years in the making and follows 12 years in the life of a family. This film follows Mason and his sister Samantha, giving the audience a unique opportunity to watch these children face the harsh realities of life as they transition from childhood into adolescence and finally into adulthood. “Boyhood” will make waves, because it doesn’t follow the life of a mythical superhero, but real children going through what we all experience as we age.

“The Giver”
Based of the book written by Lois Lowry, “The Giver” takes place in a seemingly perfect world, a world with no war, no hunger, no pain, no sickness, no misery. Everyone has a purpose and they are expected to fulfill it without complaint. Here a boy is chosen to be the apprentice to an elderly man (The Giver) and becomes the Receiver of Memories. 16-year-old Jonas quickly uncovers the haunting past of his “utopia” and he witnesses the distortion of his reality into an existence devoid of a single shred of humanity.

Remember, these are only a couple of movies premiering this summer, but be on the lookout for these specific few. They possess a large buzz growing around them, and you don’t want to miss the next movie will we obsess over for the next six months. Movies are always a great way to spend time during the summer, or early fall depending on when our movie theater actually runs these films.
